Challenge

How does a fly escape the fly swatter? With a pair of compound eyes consisting of around 180 facets, it can detect movement in real time. Each facet is a rigid camera module in itself with an unlimited depth of field. What would an artificial fly eye that has the same capabilities and is suited to mass production look like?

Invention

The RES-Fly Eye establishes a direct link between any visible object represented by a specific number of object fields and a corresponding photocell on a digital sensor. The total number of photocells corresponds to the number of object fields chosen. Similar to a fly's eye, the camera module comprises a multitude of microchannels and microlenses which, on the object side, are united by a collimating lens. In each microchannel, the collimated light focuses on a photocell of the sensor.
