The novel floating gyro turbine uses the inertial mass generated by gyroscopic forces to stabilise the turbine around its vertical axis of rotation. The hub of a horizontal spoked wheel is connected to a rod-shaped buoy situated seventy metres above sea level. The wheel is coaxial and concentric with respect to the axis of rotation. The lower end of the rod forms a ballast body. The upper rotor, which rotates clockwise, has a diameter of 300 metres and is designed as a spoked wheel with an outer rim. Ten rotor blades, arranged parallel to the axis of rotation, cantilever from the rim on both sides by fifty metres in both upward and downward directions. The rotor is supported and tensioned by cables which stabilise it like radial spokes. Collectively, these cables, the hub and the rim form a lightweight structure that meets the criteria for a Buckminster Fuller tensegrity structure. The lower rotor, which rotates anticlockwise, is designed to function as a water turbine with a smaller diameter, thereby compensating for the precession of the upper gyro. The water turbine is driven by tidal currents or flowing water. The combined peak power output of the two turbines exceeds 50 MW, meaning that one buoy can replace seven of today's most powerful floating offshore wind turbines. Furthermore, using this structure requires significantly less material, which could lead to a substantial reduction in electricity production costs.

The load-bearing components of a conventional wind turbine with a horizontal axis of rotation are subjected to continuous bending loads. In contrast, the gyro turbine with a vertical axis of rotation presented here has components that are predominantly subjected to tensile and compressive forces. The centre wing segment of the three-part rotor blade simultaneously forms part of the load-bearing structure, enabling the construction of a lightweight rotor basket comprising compression and tension members held in place by circumferentially underspan ring beams. The motor-generator is integrated into a buoy with a counterweight at its lower end. In underwater conditions, a counter-rotating water turbine delivers additional energy and enhances the hydrodynamic stability of this dual-purpose offshore installation.

The floating turbine comprises a float that houses the generator and is connected to the underwater rotor by a coaxial and concentric shaft. The upper surface of the float is covered with photovoltaic cells. The rotor blades are interconnected at their upper and lower ends by ring beams and arranged at a radial distance from the shaft by tension spokes. The suction side of the rotor blades feature a variable asymmetric foil profile and are aligned in the direction of the flow by means of integrated actuators within both halves of the orbit, which is divided by the diameter P, P'.

The RES water turbine uses wing-integrated actuators to alter the shape of its asymmetric wing. In both halves of the orbit, the suction side faces leeward. This provides an ecologically safe buoyancy runner that fish can pass in both directions. Therefore, the turbine can be used as a run-of-river power plant on inland waterways, a tidal power plant on suitable stretches of coastline and a submarine hydroelectric power plant. In this design, the rotor blades comprise leading, middle and trailing sections, with the middle section forming a rigid longitudinal beam. Actuators arranged in sections reverse the suction side of blades with diameters P and P' twice per revolution.

The Energy Chain, which is dedicated to the 17.4 million people of the Netherlands, has published its first post of the year. At high tide, the Oosterschelde is dammed up, and at low tide, the water flows into the North Sea at high speed. Between the piers of the barrage are drums containing six adjustable rotor blades each. These are driven by the current and connected by intermediate rotor discs to form a shear- and torsion-resistant frame girder with a nine-metre diameter. These rotor drums, with their adjustable blades, rotate at speeds up to five times faster than the current. Channeled through the existing barrage, they could generate an unlimited amount of energy. When the P-P' diameter is oriented perpendicular to the flow direction, the suction side of the asymmetrical blade profiles alternates between the inside and outside of the orbit. This causes the asymmetrically profiled adjustable rotor blades to generate tangential propulsive forces from lift in the flow-oriented and downstream half of the orbit.
