The challenge
Steel ropes can be used as flexible but not extendable load-bearing members for the design of exceptional load-bearing structures. They are capable to transfer loads on long distances. Structures with a multitude of nodes seem to be less suited for ropes because at each node the rope has to be interrupted and equipped with an end fitting. How can a rope structure be designed without interrupting the ropes between the structural nodes?
The invention
The RES-Rope Structure uses endless ropes with stringed fittings having parabolic saddle surfaces in order to lead the ropes around corners while the stringed fittings themselves rest in standardized clamps. Tension bolts at once press the fittings to the rope and to the clamp.
The advantages
- Advanced engineering with uninterrupted ropes
- One-layered rope net
The applications
- Filigree load-bearing structures
- Wide-span photovoltaic plants
